The Golden Gate Theatre was a first-run motion picture house, originally built for both live theatre and film performances.

By 1932, the theatre had become part of the RKO chain.

The building was converted in the late 1960s into a twin-screen theatre, which later sat idle until the theatre was renovated by the Shorenstein Hays Nederlander Organization to present live performances again.
