The Jewel Theatre was built immediately next to the American/Rialto Theatre building on valuable Market Street real estate and opened in 1917.

A previous Strand Theatre having been rechristened in 1925, the Jewel Theatre was renamed the Strand Theatre in 1928.

The building survived the October 1989 Bay Area earthquake, having survived as an adult entertainment venue until closed by an April 2003 vice raid.
