The Poppy Theatre was built by San Francisco jeweler Philip H. Doll. During the remainder of the silent era, the theatre was known by a series of names: the Rex Theatre, the Gem Theatre and the Gaiety Theatre.

In 1933, the theatre was rechristened the Roxie Theatre, by which the venue is known today.
